A bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth definitively to adjacent teeth, or implant with an adjacent implant. A bridge will span the area where teeth are missing the natural teeth or implants which support the bridge are called abutment teeth, which may be reduced in size to accommodate the bridge to fit over them.
An impression is taken of the reduced abutment tooth or the implant and the surrounding soft and hard tissues to provide a mould to fabricate the bridge. Using this as a guide, the bridge is then fabricated in a dental laboratory. With digital scanning, physical moulds are unnecessary now a days.
Your appearance is one of the reason. Another reason is that the gap left by a missing tooth can affect your bite, leading to shifting of the adjacent teeth in the gap over a period of time. Also the opposing teeth may start migrating into the gap eventually leading to caries in the opposing tooth due to food packing and gum problems.
Replacement depends on the number of teeth missing and the position of the teeth in the jaw. The condition of the other teeth needs to be accessed in order to make a final treatment plan for a fixed bridge.
There are two types of replacement available, the first is with a removable false tooth/ teeth – a partial denture. The second is with a fixed bridge. A bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth.
Bridges are usually made up of precious metal base. If the bridge is in the esthetic region we may go for a ceramic fused to metal of an all ceramic material.
There are other methods, such as using a combination of crowns and partial dentures that can keep the retaining clips out of sight. These are quiet specialized dentures. You can also have a tooth implanted in the region of missing teeth.
